Geiger avalanche photodiodes as tentative light detectors for VHE gamma ray astronomy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Due to its sensitivity and speed, the detector still widely used in Cerenkov astrophysics experiments remains the PhotoMultiplier Tube (PMT). For instance, recent pathbreaking experiments in Very High Energy astrophysics (VHE), such as MAGIC and HESS, have used mainstream PMT technology (Aharonian et al, Astron Astrophys 492(1):L25–L28, 2008). Moreover the Cerenkov Telescope Array (CTA) which is now in its design phase, is also planed to be based on PMT’s. However, there are some disadvantages to the PMT technology: the rather poor quantum efficiency, the use of high voltages, the high cost when used in large number in a matrix arrangement and the large weight. Hence, we have investigated the possibility to design future Cerenkov telescopes based on solid state technology, specifically Geiger avalanche photodiodes. In a preliminary development D. BGO readout with photodiodes as a soft gamma-ray detector at −30◦C
BGO is expected to be plausible devices for soft gamma-ray detectors, because of a high detection efficiency for soft gamma-rays. Here we report on the good performance of BGO readout with PIN-photodiode or avalanche photodiode as a soft gamma-ray detector. We confirmed that the signal output of BGO becomes comparable to that of GSO when it is readout with photodiodes due to better matching bet...

LAser Detection And Ranging (LADAR) is a promising tool for precise 3D-imaging, which enables field surveillance and target identification under low-light-level conditions in many military applications. For the time resolution and sensitivity requirements of LADAR applications, InGaAsP/InP Geiger-mode (GM) avalanche photodiodes (APDs) excel in the spectrum band between 1.0~1.6 μm. Previously MI...

3D imaging and multi-pixel rangefinding constitute one of the most important and innovative fields of research in image sensor science and engineering in the past years. In rangefinding, one computes the Time-Of-Flight of a ray of light, generated by a mono-chromatic or wide-spectral source, from the source through the reflection of a target object and to a detector. There exist at least two te...
